FAQ about TMJ and TMD

What causes TMJ Disorder (TMD)?

There are many causes, including repeated stress from clenching and grinding your teeth (bruxism), face or neck injury, arthritis or deterioration in the joint, and poor facial development.

How do I know if I have TMD?

Signs of TMD include popping or clicking noises when you open and close your mouth. You may also feel tension or tightness in your jaw or the muscles around the jaw joint when you open wide. If you can’t open your mouth as wide as most people or it hurts when you try, you may have TMD. Some symptoms, though, are harder to pinpoint, like neck pain, earaches, headaches, tingling in your fingers, and ringing in your ears. The only way to know for certain that you have TMD is to get assessed by an expert.

What can I do about TMD?

There are various treatment options, including the ones listed above. At Centreville Family Dentistry, we take a non-invasive approach to treating TMD. Your treatment may involve a combination of techniques and procedures, depending on how severe your jaw dysfunction is and the root cause.

Do I need to get treatment for TMD?

If your symptoms are not disrupting your life, you may think that treating your TMD won’t make a difference. However, TMD is a degenerative disease, meaning that it will get worse over time. Your symptoms may be tolerable now, but as your jaw joint deteriorates over the years, they will become more bothersome and possibly painful. We usually recommend some type of intervention in the early stages of TMD to minimize future problems.
